International Conference (2022):

Science and Research in, for and with UNESCO Biosphere Reserves

Since 2016, the global Lima Action Plan defines measures for UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves, which consists of 727 model regions for sustainable development in 131 countries. Being recognized as such a model region implies that an area develops in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including responsible consumption and production, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, as well as diverse life on land and below water.

The achievement of such goals requires dedicated and transformation-oriented research, the target-oriented use of scientific results and in this regard, exchanges among biosphere reserves. Accordingly, the Lima Action Plan calls for the establishment of an adequate research infrastructure. Outcome B7, for example, foresees “an active and open interdisciplinary network of scientists sharing the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) vision and mission”. This outcome shall be achieved by “an international network of scientists, working in and with BRs” (Action B7.1) and “a joint research and knowledge agenda” (Action B7.2) for this international network. Achieving such outcomes would also contribute to SDG 17 regarding partnerships.

So far, these actions have not been sufficiently implemented. The existing positive examples in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves are not very effectively disseminated between biosphere reserves or more widely. Coordinated promotion of research in this global network and its regional sub-networks is still limited. That is why a target-oriented exchange is needed. Within the framework of an international conference, we therefore seeked to find answers to the following questions and develop strategies for future action:

  • Which research questions are currently being investigated in biosphere reserves? How can the results be used?
  • What has been achieved in the promotion of research in biosphere reserves since the Lima Action Plan was adopted?
  • What are the most effective framework conditions, concepts and approaches to foster target-oriented research and innovation in biosphere reserves?
